Underground Water & Sludge Management Handbook
Water is the most persistent operating problem in a South African hard-rock mine. Fissure water, service water from drilling and washing, and water returning from backfill all end up on the same footwall — and once it collects, it stops being a nuisance and starts costing production.
Standing water in a panel slows face advance, ruins footing on inclined travelling ways, floods cross-cuts, silts up sumps, drowns pumps and eventually forces crews to hand-load mud that should never have accumulated. The cost rarely appears as a single line item. It shows up as lost blasts, overtime cleaning shifts, pump rebuilds and incident reports.
This handbook sets out how experienced crews control water underground, from the face back to the pump station, and where purpose-built equipment removes the manual work altogether. It is written for mine overseers, section engineers, SHE managers and procurement teams who have to justify the spend.
